The Bronze on the Boyne Symposium Sponsored by County Meath VEC Community Education is inviting artists to apply to join the project which will be taking place on the 13th to the 18th of August
This is a full time one week long workshop followed by an exhibition of work on August the 19th. Being held in Trim, county Meath in the M.O.T centre (Meath opportunities for Training)
This is a wonderful and rare opportunity to learn how to cast your own bronze with a well refined technique that can be reproduced in your own backyard.
This is done by using readily available clay moulds as practised by bronze age practitioners of the art and not subject to the difficulties of modern ceramic shell or plaster . This produces low cost moulds of high quality finish using firing and smelting techniques that are easily reproducible at home.
This will be facilitated by experienced professional artists
Sean O’Dwyer MFA and James Hayes MScMMSys
5 Professional Artists will be required to bring their wax of the size specified for spruing, investment, firing and casting all culminating in an exhibition during the Trim Walled Town Festival
They will be accompanied by 5 Student Artists from various courses in the county also working in the medium as part of the apprenticeship aspect of the symposium.
The cost to the individual artist is only 200 euros for the week to cover materials etc.
Accommodation will be provided locally for the week of the symposium where needed
Artists without previous casting and metal experience but with relevant background in 3D media are welcome to apply.
There will be an informal free pre-symposium mould-making and wax casting workshop for artists in this category, running from the 9th to the 10th of August in time for the bronze casting.
Some casting will be demonstrated in process to the public and we hope to have plenty of accompanying activity, music and merrymaking in the spirit of the symposium.
We believe this will be a very beneficial opportunity for artists to expand skills, commercial opportunities and enjoy an exciting process along the way.
